Social Enterprise Development Initiative

The Australian government has committed to funding social enterprises to address entrenched disadvantage, and also committed to codesigning how that funding would be allocated with the social enterprise sector.

Social Enterprise Australia has been working with the government on this and I'm thrilled that they have just opened up workshops for the social enterprise sector to have our say. Please see more info below and sign up to share your views.

From Social Enterprise Australia:

The Social Enterprise Development Initiative is about to be turned from words into action. This year the social enterprise sector saw itself named for the first time in the federal budget, with the $11.6 million Social Enterprise Development Initiative. It has two parts:

  • Capability-building grants

  • Online education and mentoring

The grants will be to support the capability of social enterprises to demonstrate and grow social impact, including to improve their ability to secure capital and participate in the social impact investment market. As the Initiative sits within the Department of Social Services, grants can only be provided to social enterprises focused on people experiencing disadvantage in relation to:

  • Communities and inclusion

  • Employment, training and participation

  • Health and disability

  • Early childhood development

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

  • Culturally and linguistically diverse people

The online education and mentoring will be to support the capability of the ecosystem to grow social impact, including to improve their ability to unlock capital for impact and to participate in the social impact investment market.
